What I Wear To Work As A Kids Stylist

Here on the Blog, I talk about my life as a Kids Lifestyle Photo Stylist.  Today, thought I would share with you what I wear on my job and on photo shoots.

When I style kids (models) that are hired for the shoot and I'm in the studio/on location, I have a tendency to dress exactly how I style them!  Colorful with bold prints and patterns like polka dots and gingham.  Guess it's a "signature style" for myself too. ;)

I’m usually casual and colorful on shoots and wear pants.  My work oftentimes involves being up and down all day on ladders or on the floor when doing interior shoots (like kids bedrooms, hanging curtains, placing rugs on floors, playrooms, craft rooms, etc.)  so pants are the better option.  Also, I do love wearing Free People’s Onsie’s.  They are so comfortable and I can layer it with a long cardigan long tank top, tunic, white button down or denim shirt.

When styling kids, I try to be relatable and fun and how I dress is a part of that.  But . . . when I’m prepping and out shopping for a shoot, I usually where a comfortable, casual dress with sneakers or boots (even in the summer)  A absolute favorite is Sonnet James. Love Whitney’s style and approach to her designs - she calls them "playful dresses for playful people".  My favorite Style is the Remi Dress that has a baseball shirt look. (Also available in this color too)  I have the exact one posted here in pink and orange.  That’s one of my “go-to” palettes - pink and orange.  Just makes me happy!

Here’s what I’m looking at and have purchased to wear on spring photo shoots.

Style Guidelines for My "Working Wardrobe":

▪︎ If I'm in the dark photo studio working, a generally wear black and avoid anything bright or reflective.

▪︎ Always wear really comfortable white tees, white long tanks (so I'm not constantly pulling them down!) and white button down shirts. (Classics - always in style, clean look and goes with everything!)

▪︎ Always wear easy, slip on shoes, no heels and no shoe laces.  When working with photo studio oftentimes I am stepping on seamless paper and don't want to get it dirty, so I slip on a pair of socks before I step on paper and I need to be fast and easy about it - so easy slip on shoes!

▪︎  I don't wear jewelry or anything a little sharp.  Don't want to risk any fabric or textile being caught or "snagged" and damaging fabric or garment to be used in the shoot.

▪︎  Always dress in layers, for when it gets too hot or too cold.  (Also wear a tank top with a skinny scarf for a little warmth and layer.)

These are my "go-to" sites for "away for work" style:

Net-a-Porter
Modaoperandi
Neiman Marcus
Ford

& I definitely always have my eye of Alex Perry, specifically this one.

I talk specifics about the career of Photo Styling over at my site and blog at bonnieaunchman.com where I help, coach and mentor aspiring photo stylists, but thought I would post specifically what I wear as  Kids Photo Stylist here! :)

Be Playful!
